If you didn’t see the news the other day, the media informed us that the planet just surpassed 200 million COVID-19 cases worldwide. That’s right, the “most highly infectious virus ever” is sweeping through the population at maybe 1.5% a year.
“Excellent!” you may think. “In a scant 67 years, my great-grandchildren will be able to attend college mask-free!”
But we have a big problem, folks.
Our human population of 7.8 billion people is growing by 1.1% a year.
That’s right, humanity is growing barely slower than the COVID infection that’s wrecking our planet… and our economies… and our liberal democratic republics… and our personal physical and mental health.
But there’s hope on the horizon! By my (very rough) estimates, in only about 926 years the spread of COVID will exceed the human population! We’ll be mask-free by 2948, maybe even by 2947 if we all get vaxxed and mask up!
Now to be serious.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in this pandemic-turned-freedom fight, it’s that only one side knows how to do math. I’m glad I’m on that side.
If there’s a second thing I’ve learned, it’s how terrifying it is to know that so many people are willing to toss critical thinking out the window in the name of The Cause. Many people will believe two completely contradicting pieces of information, as long as they don’t have to admit they’re wrong.
“You should take this vaccine that’s 95% effective but doesn’t prevent the disease, because herd immunity has never been achieved without a vaccine and getting to herd immunity naturally will result in so many millions of people dying from the 99.9% survivable virus that’s highly infectious and barely spreading at the same time, because the hospitals are overflowing while they’re reducing their bed counts, and you don’t have to wear a mask if you’re vaxxed but if you are vaxxed you still have to wear the mask that works one way and is more effective than a vaccine and works one way again and works both ways and all the health leaders who said in the first place that masks never work for viruses are being taken out of context.”
People believe this. Without questioning it. And then they get angry when you point out it doesn’t make sense. I will never understand them.
Seriously, what kind of “deadly and highly infectious virus” requires public health decisions to be made in the courtroom? I guarantee you, if this were Ebola running through the country, you wouldn’t need lotteries, scholarships, and other incentives to get people (me included) to take an experimental vaccine.
When I was a kid my parents, who were kids themselves during World War II, would occassionally ask in disbelief how the most technically, scientifically, and culturally advanced nation on the planet at the time – the Germans – could so quickly toss out all they knew to be rational, round up their neighbors, and exterminate them.
I’ll keep fighting to ensure my grandchildren never ask the same thing to me.
